Layout and Typesetting Study

Intro/About: This project is from a typography class. The purpose of this project was to explore layout and typesetting techniques using a multi-column grid.

The intended outcome of this project was to find a 1000+ word article and design an open spread using the title, subtitle, and body text from the article.

The article I chose is titled How Cults Made America, and it was written for the New Yorker by Tom Bissell on April 24th, 2019.

Image was created using Midjourney.

Sketches & Ideation

Initial sketches were based on the concept of pressure, confinement, and isolation. This is because the beginning stages of recruiting a new member into a cult including pressuring the individual, as well as isolating them from friends and family.

I explored using various column widths to create a feeling of pressure as the viewer reads across the spread.

The secord part of the sketch phase focused on exploring how the title could become more of the focal point, as well as finding interesting pull quotes from the article to feature in the spread.

Font Exploration

I wanted to use a serif font, especially for the title. These are a handful of fonts I tested to see which resonated with pressure and isolation, and had a newspaper look to them.

Digital Ideation

The first series of digital ideation combined the title exploration sketches with varying column widths for the body text.

Refinement of the spread, exploring title and pull quote placement, debating which should be the focal point of the spread.
